ARQ Summer Assembly

The War in the Therapy Room: The Influence of Context in Treatment

An Exchange of Lessons Learned from Psychotrauma Care in Conflict Zones. On 1 July 2025 from 16:30 - 18:30 at ARQ location Diemen.

In this third ARQ Assembly, we explore the following question:

What can we, as Dutch healthcare professionals, learn from experiences and approaches in humanitarian contexts?

We reflect on the structural determinants of mental health in war-affected individuals within humanitarian settings. We delve into how factors such as poverty, inequality, displacement, and limited access to healthcare impact the mental well-being of people living in crisis situations worldwide. Various experts will provide insights for reflection on our own work here in the Netherlands. Using concrete examples from humanitarian contexts — and also among undocumented individuals in the Netherlands — they will demonstrate how these structural determinants profoundly affect mental health and how we can address them in treatment.

What happens when we open the door of the treatment room and incorporate the broader context of these individuals into the treatment? What is our role and responsibility in this?

Programme 1 July 2025

During the ARQ Summer Assembly ‘The War in the Therapy Room: The Influence of Context in Treatment’, we will examine these questions and more from various perspectives. We will take you across borders and highlight the experiences of experts who are committed to promoting the mental health of war-affected individuals in conflict zones and the Netherlands.

The full programme will be communicated the coming weeks. However, we are proud to already announce that Prof. Dr. Wietse A. Tol, endowed professor of ‘Global Mental Health and Structural Vulnerabilities’ at the Athena Institute of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, will kick off the substantive programme.

The ARQ Summer Assembly offers a platform to share experiences and insights from various war zones so that we can learn from each other and collectively find ways to work even more effectively.
