ARQ Winter Assembly 30-1-2025
PTSD, Social Trauma & (LGBTQ+) Identity
Experiences of Social Trauma, or a violation of social integrity, such as emotional violence and bullying, are not part of the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), unlike experiences of physical or sexual violence. But social trauma can contribute to a wide range of mental disorders and increase the severity of symptoms in patients with PTSD.
When refugees become victims of (physical or sexual) violence due to their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression (SOGIE), it is often in addition to other experiences of rejection, exclusion and discrimination. Therefore LGBTQ+ refugees can develop psychotrauma complaints and also experience problems in the areas of self-image, social relationships and/or meaning.
Programme 30 January 2025
How can you reduce the complaints resulting from (social) trauma? How can we use a transdiagnostic approach when reducing these complaints? What does it mean when social trauma is specifically linked to your identity, in a context of stigma and/or marginalization?
During the ARQ Winter Assembly ‘PTSD, Social Trauma & (LGBTQ+) Identity’, we address these questions and more from different perspectives.
- Prof. Dr Frank Neuner, professor of clinical psychology at Bielefeld University, talks about the latest scientific insights into Social Trauma.
- Hugo Konz, psychiatrist and medical anthropologist, speaks about the treatment of PTSD and Social Trauma in LGBTQ+ refugees.
- Alejandra Ortiz, is a writer and, as a trans woman, fled violence and transphobia from Mexico. Based on her book ‘The truth will set me free’, she talks about her fight for a better life for trans people, especially for trans people of color - with or without papers.
Sunni Lamin Barrow enriches the programme with a spoken word performance:
“Take My Silence as a Gift”.
