Rethinking Collaboration in Mental Health
Personal reflections from Wietse Tol
Equitable collaboration in global mental health focuses on how we work together, not just the content of our work. ARQ Endowed Professor Wietse Tol emphasises mental health as a social justice issue, requiring historical awareness, sustained engagement with underrepresented communities and inclusive partnerships that extend beyond a Global North–South divide.
Working Together for Social Justice
Wietse Tol emphasises that collaboration must address power imbalances and structural inequalities in research. He believes real change involves giving the time and space for the natural development of solutions, engaging local communities and experts in decision-making, and promoting inner growth alongside shared resources and strategies, to ensure that interventions are fair and socially equitable.
Building More Inclusive MHPSS Collaboration Together
His reflections were part of the ARQ symposium “Towards Equitable Collaboration in Global Mental Health,” where participants from the Global South and North explored ways to build fairer, more inclusive partnerships in MHPSS and global mental health.
