The Need of Transforming the MHPSS Field
Personal reflection from Ananda Galappatti
Equitable collaboration in Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) involves more than just working together; it demands rethinking and shaping the field. For over 25 years, medical anthropologist Ananda Galappatti has reflected on the challenges facing the MHPSS sector. His insights underscore the urgent need for transformation towards a ‘critical MHPSS’ approach.
Reimagining the Field
Ananda emphasises that many of the concerns he has carried for decades are shared by colleagues across regions and disciplines, bringing both validation and urgency to the work. He highlights the importance of integrating local knowledge, community perspectives, and culturally grounded approaches into research, policy, and practice, stressing that “the way we organise ourselves is the way we move forward”.
Building More Inclusive MHPSS Collaboration Together
His reflections were part of the ARQ symposium “Towards Equitable Collaboration in Global Mental Health,” where participants from the Global South and North explored ways to build fairer, more inclusive partnerships in MHPSS and global mental health.
