Navigating Structural Injustice

Personal reflection from Prasansa Subba

Equitable collaboration is rarely simple, and postdoctoral fellow Prasansa Subba reflects on the political and structural complexities that shape partnerships in global mental health. Drawing on over a decade of experience in the Global South, she emphasises the importance of recognising local nuances, power dynamics, and intersecting inequities to create meaningful change.

Understanding both Power Structures and Local Nuances

Prasansa highlights that collaboration challenges in Global Mental Health extend beyond simple North–South divides. Aspects such as gender, language, religion, geography, and local power relations significantly shape communities, everyday experiences, and the knowledge created. Achieving equitable partnerships involves recognising these complexities, addressing structural injustices, and encouraging dialogue that empowers communities to develop their own solutions.

Building More Inclusive MHPSS Collaboration Together

Her reflections were part of the ARQ symposium “Towards Equitable Collaboration in Global Mental Health,” where participants from the Global South and North explored ways to build fairer, more inclusive partnerships in MHPSS and global mental health.
