Blue Haven for Ukraine
Psychosocial support for Ukrainian professionals in high-risk occupations
The war in Ukraine has had a major impact on the well-being of Ukrainian professionals in high-risk occupations. It is essential that they are provided with effective psychosocial support. That is why EUAM Ukraine started the Blue Haven for Ukraine project in 2025. The project aims to improve the mental health of these Ukrainian professionals by creating a sustainable system for psychosocial support.
These professionals lead teams of law enforcement and emergency service personnel, who are frequently exposed to distressing wartime experiences, including violence, threats, and human suffering. Providing psychosocial support at an early stage is therefore essential to promote wellbeing, prevent mental health difficulties, and help the people and institutions continue functioning under sustained pressure.
From 2025 to 2027, ARQ is contributing to Blue Haven for Ukraine by providing training and supervision to healthcare professionals working for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine (MoIA). These professionals treat people in a range of high-risk occupations.
The trainings aim to:
- support the structural integration of psychosocial support for professionals in high-risk jobs within the MoIA
- train healthcare professionals at MoIA in evidence-based methods for the prevention and treatment of psychotrauma
ARQ provides 6 trainings
1| Psycho-education training
In this training, participants learn about stress management, psychotrauma and shock processing, coping strategies, moral injury, and grief.
2| Staff support training
This training focuses on how to protect and improve the well-being and mental health of staff. Participants learn how to monitor staff well-being and develop action plans to improve well-being at the individual, team, and organisational levels.
3| 7ROSES empowerment method training
7ROSES is a flexible method that helps people strengthen their own abilities, build resilience, improve daily functioning, and make better use of support from people around them. After completing this training, participants are able to train other psychologists in the 7ROSES empowerment method.
4| Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) training
NET is a trauma treatment for people who have experienced multiple traumatic events. NET therapy focuses on the patient's life story, including both distressing experiences and positive memories. The goal of NET therapy is to help patients integrate isolated memories into a coherent life story.
5| Brief Eclectic Psychotherapy for PTSD (BEPP) training
BEPP is a trauma treatment that helps patients to understand and process the impact of traumatic experiences. BEPP combines elements from various therapeutic approaches, including imaginal exposure, meaning-making, and writing exercises. BEPP helps patients face and process painful thoughts and emotions so they can regain control of their lives.
6| Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) training
During EMDR therapy, the patient is asked to recall a distressing event and focus on the image that causes the most distress. At the same time, the therapist provides a distracting task, such as moving their hand or tapping. This dual attention task reduces the vividness and emotional intensity of the memory, making it easier for the brain to process and store it.
